Hymn Histories

The origins of songs that have accompanied generations: the people, circumstances, and moments of faith behind their composition.

God Will Take Care of You

Civilla D. Martin wrote the words in 1904, and her husband Walter Stillman Martin composed the music. The hymn grew out of an experience that deepened the Martins’ confidence in God's providential care, and its refrain has offered assurance to generations facing uncertainty.

Day by Day

Swedish hymn writer Lina Sandell wrote this meditation on daily dependence on God in the nineteenth century. Oscar Ahnfelt supplied the familiar melody, and Andrew L. Skoog's English translation helped the hymn travel beyond Sweden. Its message rests on the conviction that strength is given for each day's needs.

Blessed Assurance

Fanny J. Crosby wrote this hymn in 1873, working with a melody by Phoebe Palmer Knapp. The song's confident declaration of faith soon became a congregational favourite, joining personal testimony with the shared voice of worship.
