Reflection — Wendy McPherson

My favourite hymn is Jesus Paid It All. I love this hymn because, every time I feel like I cannot go on, or when I do something wrong, or when I think that I am unworthy, it reminds me that Jesus paid the price for my sins. He washed me white as snow. Knowing this gives me the confidence and courage I need to endure through this dark, sinful and corrupted world (even in the SDA churches). Now my life is not about me, it’s about the One who paid the price so that I can live eternally.

I have turned to this hymn many times, but one experience stands out. During a Federation election, a certain leader was telling the committee who to vote for in the different positions. I took this very hard, and I almost gave up my post. I remember feeling hurt and discouraged, and thinking that I had somehow failed because I should have trusted God in it.

In that moment the hymn came to mind. As I sang the words, I was reminded that Jesus had already paid it all. I asked for forgiveness, chose to let go, and moved on. Over time I saw how God was working, and I realized that nothing and no one will ever again put me in that situation. God is in control, and He sees and knows everything. I will keep on trusting Him.

There were other times too, when this hymn has strengthened me. Whenever I feel discouraged, it helps me remember that I am not defined by my failures, but by what Jesus has done for me.

A Thought to Carry

When we feel unworthy, discouraged or unable to go on, we can return to the cross. Jesus paid it all. His grace cleanses, restores and gives us the strength to live for Him.
