The Hymn

Verse 1

Under His wings I am safely abiding,
Though the night deepens and tempests are wild,
Still I can trust Him; I know He will keep me,
He has redeemed me, and I am His child.

Refrain

Under His wings, under His wings,
Who from His love can sever?
Under His wings my soul shall abide,
Safely abide forever.

Verse 2

Under His wings, what a refuge in sorrow!
How the heart yearningly turns to His rest!
Often when earth has no balm for my healing,
There I find comfort, and there I am blessed.

Verse 3

Under His wings, oh, what precious enjoyment!
There will I hide till life’s trials are o’er;
Sheltered, protected, no evil can harm me,
Resting in Jesus, I’m safe evermore.

Growing up in my church in Golden Grove, I heard “Under His Wings I’m Safely Abiding” at every Divine Hour worship service. Each time it was sung, the words painted a living picture for me: I saw myself as a little chick, gently gathered into the strong, powerful hands of God. In that image I felt completely safe—protected, held, and secure.

That childhood picture has stayed with me all my life. Even now I see my Heavenly Father in much the same way: my security, my defender, my helper, my all in all. Through every season I have found comfort in knowing that I am held safely in His hands. It is a picture of His unfailing love, protection, and faithfulness, and it still gives me strength and quiet assurance each day.

Why I Love This Hymn

Its message speaks to my deep need of an omnipresent, ever-faithful, intimate, and almighty God—my safe haven and shelter, the One who remains in control of every situation and by whom I am forever loved.

Singing or hearing this hymn is a declaration: I can face every circumstance in life because I am still under God’s care.
